Prioritizing Health and Safety in Your Practice
The health and safety procedures implemented in your practice are paramount to providing quality service. In the event that a client contracts an infection, not only are you putting them at risk, but also the reputation of your business, the health of other clients, and your own personal well-being. As a true professional, it's crucial to demonstrate diligence at each step of the health and safety procedures, every single time. Understanding the significance of each step, while also creating streamlined and easy-to-follow procedures, will guarantee that no step is skipped or forgotten.
I will link an eyelash IPAC professional whom you can take addition certification through. I highly, HIGHLY reccomend taking this addition step in educating yourself as a lash professional.
IPAC refers to the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) course and exam offered by BeautyPro Media for lash professionals. It provides training on infection control protocols for the beauty industry, helping professionals maintain a safe environment for clients. The company updates the course content regularly to reflect current protocols and offers annual exams for professionals.

Lash mapping is a technique used to design and plan the placement of eyelash extensions to achieve a specific look tailored to the client's eye shape, facial structure and shape that will complement the desired style.
Setting a profitable price is a simple equation: Costs + Value = Price.
I. Calculating Your Costs and Setting Profitable Pricing (Canadian Context)
To ensure every hour you work is profitable, you must first calculate your true Cost Per Service (CPS). This is not just the cost of glue and lashes; it includes all business expenses.
Direct Material Costs (Cost of Goods Sold - COGS):
What it is: The cost of the disposable items used for a single full set.
Example: Calculate the cost of: 2 Under-Eye Pads( $2), 10-15 Extensions($0.15), 5 drops of Adhesive($1.25), 2 Micro Swabs ($0.02), primer ($0.50), 1 Spoolie given to client ($0.10), and 1 pair of Gloves ($2.00).
If your materials for a full set cost you $6,02 CAD, that's your starting minimum.
Overhead Costs
(The Hidden Costs):
What it is: The fixed expenses required to keep your business running, regardless of how many clients you see.
Example: Monthly Rent/Studio Fee, Liability Insurance, Business Licenses, Disinfectant/Cleaner costs, Hydro/Utilities (especially crucial if running dehumidifiers/humidifiers).
Tip: Calculate your total monthly overhead and divide it by the number of services you realistically perform per month to get your Overhead Cost Per Service (OCPS).
Labour Cost (Your Salary):
What it is: The amount you need to pay yourself per hour to make a living. You must set a realistic hourly wage.
Example: If you want to earn $30 CAD per hour, and a Classic Full Set takes you 2.5 hours, your labour cost for that service is $75.00.
Final Profitable Price Calculation:
Your final price must be higher than: (Direct Material Costs + Overhead Costs + Labour Costs).
If your total costs equal $100 CAD, you must charge more than $100 CAD just to break even.
II. The Value of Time: Efficiency and Speed
Time is your most valuable non-renewable resource. Improving your speed allows you to charge more per hour and increase your total daily revenue.
Efficiency is Profit:
Example: If you charge $150 for a Classic Set and it takes you 3.0 hours, your hourly rate is $50/hour.
If you refine your technique and reduce that same set to 2.0 hours, your effective hourly rate jumps to $75/hour—without raising the price.
Action: Master your glue dipping, isolation, and tile setup to shave minutes off every step.
The Fill Time Standard:
Your Fill appointments (every 2-3 weeks) should always be shorter than a full set, typically 40% to 50% of the full set time.
Example: If a Full Set is 2.5 hours, a Fill should be 1 to 1.5 hours. Pricing your fills correctly ensures clients return frequently and maintain a profitable service cycle.
Setting an Hourly Goal:
Determine a realistic hourly goal for your business, such as $20-$30 CAD per hour.
Set your service prices based on that goal, rather than guessing. If your goal is $20/hour and your service takes 2.5 hours, your service price must be at least $56 (plus material costs).
Premium for Speed:As your speed and skill increase, you gain the authority to charge a premium because you are providing the same high-quality results in less time. Your high price reflects the value of the time you save the client.
I. 📸 Lash Photography 101 (The Money Shot)
High-quality photographs are the foundation of your portfolio and directly impact your booking rate. You must treat photography as part of the service.
Lighting is Everything (The Key to Clarity):
Goal: Eliminate shadows and highlight the details of your work (isolation, bond, fan symmetry).
Tool: Invest in a dedicated, high-quality ring light or a bright LED lash lamp.
Technique: Position the light so it shines directly onto the lashes from above or slightly in front. Never rely on yellow overhead room lighting. Bright, neutral white light is the best.
Angles for Impact:
The Hero Shot (Eyes Open): This is the main photo. Have the client look slightly upward (not straight ahead) to maximize the visibility of the length and curl. Use natural light from a window or your ring light to catch a glint in the eye.
The Isolation Shot (Eyes Closed): Take a very close-up photo of the lash line while the client's eyes are closed. This angle proves the cleanliness of your work—showing the perfect distance from the skin and proving the lashes are not stuck together.
The Side Profile: Have the client turn their head so you can capture the curvature and dramatic lift of the lashes.
Basic Editing (Enhance, Don't Distort):
Allowed Edits (Enhance): Adjusting brightness, slightly increasing contrast to make the black lashes pop, and cropping the image tight around the eyes.
Forbidden Edits (Distort): Never use heavy filters, never blur the lash line (it hides "stickies"), and never use Photoshop or FaceTune to edit the skin or change the color of the lashes. Your portfolio must be an honest representation of your skill.
II. 📱 Social Media Content Calendar
Social media is your storefront. A Content Calendar ensures you post consistently, professionally, and strategically.
What it is: A schedule that plans your daily or weekly posts, stories, and videos in advance.
Why you need it: Consistency builds trust and visibility. Algorithms reward consistent posting, ensuring your work reaches potential clients.
Content Pillars (What to Post): Your posts should rotate through these themes to keep your audience engaged:
"Show Your Work": High-quality before-and-after photos and videos. (80% of content).
"Client Education": Posts explaining aftercare, why oil is bad, or the difference between C and D curls. (Builds authority).
"Behind the Scenes": Photos of your clean studio, your sterile tools, or quick clips of you shaking your glue. (Builds trust and shows professionalism).
"Personal Touch": A quick photo of you or a simple poll. (Connects with the client).
III. 💌 Client Testimonials and Referrals
Trust is the ultimate currency. Testimonials and client referrals are the most effective, low-cost marketing tools available.
Actively Ask for Testimonials:
Timing: Ask for a review immediately after the client is done and has seen the final result. Their excitement is highest at this moment.
Method: Send a quick, polite text link directing them to your Google Business page or your social media review section.
Tip: Feature positive testimonials prominently on your website and social media stories. Use short snippets that praise your cleanliness, comfort, and retention.
The Referral Program (Incentivizing Word-of-Mouth):
What it is: A system where you reward existing clients for sending you new business.
Example: Create a "Bring-a-Friend" program. Offer the existing client $10 off their next fill and the new referred client $10 off their first full set.
Why it works: Clients trust recommendations from friends more than any paid advertisement. This encourages your best, most loyal clients to become your sales team.
Once you are certified, your application technique is just one part of running a successful business. The other part is professional structure.
Policies are your rules of engagement. They are pre-written guidelines that clearly define what clients can expect from you, and what you expect from them.
1. Policies Protect Your Time and Income
This is the most important reason for a small business owner!
Protecting Your Income: If a client cancels 30 minutes before their appointment, your policy on Cancellations and No-Shows ensures you are compensated for that lost time (via a deposit or fee). Without a policy, you lose money.
Protecting Your Schedule: A Late Policy clearly defines when you must turn a client away (because their lateness impacts your next client). This keeps your day running smoothly and respects everyone's time, including yours.
2. They Prevent Awkward Conflict
Imagine having to argue with a client about why you can't fill their lashes after two months. Policies prevent this emotional friction.
Clarity = Confidence: When you have a clear, written Fill Policy (e.g., "Must have 40% of extensions remaining to qualify as a fill"), you don't have to argue. You simply refer the client back to the rules they agreed to when booking.
Professionalism: Stating your rules upfront makes you look organized, serious, and professional. Clients are more likely to respect boundaries when they are clear and applied consistently to everyone.
3. They Define Service Quality and Liability
Your policies serve as a contract regarding the service you provide.
Retention Guarantee: A Retention/Guarantee Policy dictates when a client can come back for a fix (e.g., "Must notify me within 48 hours of service"). This manages client expectations about how long the lashes should last and removes liability for issues that arise due to improper aftercare.
Aftercare Reinforcement: Policies often require the client to follow strict aftercare. This places the responsibility for maintenance where it belongs—with the client—protecting the integrity of your work.
In summary: Policies act as your professional armor and your silent business partner. They manage expectations, protect your livelihood, and ensure you are treated with respect as a professional service provider.
📋 The Essential Policy Checklist
ou should create clear, concise written policies for these five areas and require every client to acknowledge them (usually done during online booking or on your digital consent form).
1. Cancellation and No-Show Policy
This policy protects your income and your time.
Key Detail: Define the required notice period (e.g., 24 or 48 hours).
Consequence: State the fee for late cancellation or no-show (e.g., loss of deposit or 50–100% of the service cost charged to the card on file).
2. Late Arrival Policy
This policy protects your schedule and the appointment of the client following.
Key Detail: Define the maximum grace period (e.g., 10 minutes).
Consequence: State that arrivals past the grace period will result in the appointment being cancelled and treated as a No-Show (and subject to the No-Show fee).
3. Fill Appointment Policy
This policy protects your time management and ensures consistent quality.
Key Detail: Clearly define what qualifies as a "Fill." Standard minimum is 40% of lashes remaining per eye.
Consequence:State that if less than the required amount remains, the appointment must be upgraded to a Full Set (at the corresponding price).
4. Retention/Satisfaction Guarantee Policy
This policy manages expectations and limits your liability for issues outside your control.
Key Detail: Define a short window for contact regarding retention issues (e.g., contact within 48-72 hours of the initial service).
Consequence: State that issues reported within that window (and without evidence of misuse) will be fixed free of charge. Issues reported outside this window are not covered.
5. Cell Phone/Distraction Policy
This policy ensures client safety and efficient service.
Key Detail: Clearly state that clients must keep their eyes closed for the entire service and that talking or excessive movement is not permitted.
Consequence: State that cell phone usage is strictly prohibited during the application to prevent eye irritation, movement, and potential injury.

You are only 2 Practical exmas away frrom becoming certified in Classic lash application. Below i will list the criteria needed to submit your manniquin exam. please follow the instructions below.
for your first practical exam you will need to submit two photos of your fully lashed mannequin in bright clear lighting. Any photos submitted that are unclear, have a glare, blurry and or do not follow the instructions you willbe asked to re-send.
1) You will need to submit two photos showing two different lash maps on your manniquin. To make sure the student understand lash mapping when submitting the photo the mannequin will need to have the mapped out eyepads still on showing the lash mapping, in this photo you will need to be able to see both eyelids clearly, lash mapping clearly and the eyelashes clearly. The angle of the photo should be a 'birds eye view' with the very top in the mannequins forehead facing you, and the nose and chin facing away from you.
2) The second email required will be an up close look at the lash line so that way the educator will be able to see your isolation, lash placement from the lash line, and lash direction. If the isolation is poor (meaning that more than one mannequin lash it attached to a lash extension OR more than one extension is attached to a mannequin lash.) this will be a non-pass, BUT you will get a re-do until your isolation, placement, and direction is perfected.
when emailing you will need to do the following:
Subject/Heading: Manniquin Mapping OR Isolation

Kassandra, 9X Certified Lash Artist & your 2x Accredited Lash Educator. Ready to transform your...
Hi, I'm Kass!
I have been in the beauty industry for 16 years. I started out as a cosmetician and freelance makeup artist, working within SSM and Ottawa, Ontatio. In 2010, I was given an opportunity to take a Lash Extension course, and I absolutely loved it! Later, I received my master makeup artistry & Special FX diploma and international license. During Covid, I decided to enroll in different courses from various artists in the industry to learn new techniques and enhance my knowledge. I practiced on anyone I could get my hands on!
Once the restrictions started lifting, I took lashing more seriously and started accepting clients after work or on my days off. This is when Lash Alley Beauty was born! I started to realize I might be able to go somewhere with this! I knew I was on the right path when I received an overwhelming positive response from my clients. I had achieved making an impact in these women's lives that helped make them feel beautiful and empowered. I knew this is what I was meant to do!
So I opened up @lashalleybeauty full-time in December 2020! And I haven't looked back!
In March 2024, LAB was able to expand out of the tiny home studio I had come to love to a storefront in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie! I’ve since renovated the storefront to a little salon where I am able to continue to service all my amazing clients, to teaching and training other lash-entrepreneurs!
Stay tuned because, like always, there is something new and exciting around the corner for LAB, clients, students and local lash artists!
